What is a phobia?

Fears and phobias are extreme anxieties that cause an emotional and physical reaction. When a phobia or extreme fear is triggered the autonomic nervous system reacts instantly and the person is unable to control their response. There are many hundreds of different fears and phobias but generally they can be categorised in three different ways.

Social Phobias - a paralysing fear of social, intimate or professional encounters, this includes the fear of public speaking, which many people suffer from.

Specific Phobias - these can be fears of anything, one of the top phobias people suffer from is fear of insects and particularly spiders, but there is no limit to what people can be afraid of. Common phobias are fear of heights, flying, enclosed spaces, driving, water, needles, thunder, balloons, birds, dogs, cats and many more.

Panic Disorders - this is where a person, for no apparent reason, can suddenly be gripped by an overwhelming feeling of panic that they are unable to control (panic attacks). This kind of panic disorder can be devastating because the person does not know when it is likely to strike.

How can hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy is one of the quickest and most effective ways of removing of a phobia. Generally a course of 3 to 5 sessions of advanced structured hypnotherapy is recommended, during these sessions we will be looking to pinpoint where the phobia started. Often phobias begin in childhood as a normal fear that following years of avoidance of this fear has become a phobia. Phobias can also be ‘caught' from parents or siblings who express this fear regularly or they can result from a particular experience that was uncomfortable or traumatic, for example, a visit to the doctors' office for childhood immunisations could spark a phobia of needles.

Many people have absolutely no idea why they have a particular phobia or where it came from, for instance, phobias like fear of buttons, or feathers, which are quite common, seem to be irrational, but with advanced structured hypnotherapy we can find out why and how these phobias formed. Once we have this information we are able to remove the phobia so literally after only two, three, four or possibly five sessions you will have been able to release your fear completely.

How many sessions will it take?

Nail biting and some phobias can often be resolved in just one session. Other problems usually require three to five sessions. Each session lasts approximately one hour, and it is preferable to allow a week in between sessions.

The therapy

Many hypnotherapists only use suggestion hypnosis in helping their clients overcome their problems or achieve their goals. However experience has shown that by combining successful elements of hypnotherapy such as suggestion hypnosis, and regression, NLP for example parts therapy, positive visualisation and other therapies as appropriate, greater success is achieved in a shorter period.
